Urmi Roy, an artist from Bangladesh, currently studying and practicing in UK. Roy’s first formal art education was in the University of Dhaka where she did her bachelors and first masters. Her masters degree in printmaking from University of Dhaka where she chose Lithography as her primary media. After finishing her education in Bangladesh, she has moved to UK and started her journey as a visual artist, whilst studying MA Fine Art at the University of Brighton. Beside her education, Roy is also trained in classical dance and music.
Within her practice Roy is interested in the relationships and narratives generated within ‘the self’; the cultural, conscious and subconscious worlds of real and imagined, of memory, of our relationship to nature and liberty of being human. She always tends to sneak into her inner self and surroundings, mostly portraying herself. Though she portrays herself in her artworks, she also discovered how the spectators might find themselves in her work. The key element of her practice is particularly through print languages of woodcut, lithography and etching, and also introducing other mixed media.
Roy has participated in many national and international exhibitions including 1st Print Biennale India 2018, 18th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh, International Engravist Collection Exhibition, Turkey 2019, 23rd National Exhibition, Bangladesh, 2019 ,21th young Artist Exhibition 2018, Bangladesh etc. She also achieved some prestigious awards including honorable mention in the 1st Print Biennale India, Media Best Award in woodcut at Annual Exhibition, University of Dhaka etc. during her student life.
